From the Founder
Hi, my name is Yuriy, and ProfitFlow is the culmination of my personal journey and over 20 years of experience designing and developing financial systems. This tool is not just software; it's a solution born from my own painful financial experience and a deep understanding of financial systems. While I didn't invent Profit First or cash flow forecasting, I integrated these powerful concepts into a single, intuitive platform. I'm deeply grateful to Mike Michalowicz for his Profit First book, which was a pivotal inspiration.

From Financial Nightmare to
Financial Clarity
In early 2018, life felt like a dream. My business was humming along, taxes were paid (albeit with a bit of stress), and I'd just returned from a blissful overseas holiday. Everything seemed perfect.
Then, the floor dropped out.
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) discovered an accounting error from 2016. A mistake made by someone long gone from the accounting firm, but ultimately, my responsibility. This wasn't just a minor blip; it was the start of a financial freefall.
Suddenly, the business began to decline. By mid-year, I was facing a harsh reality: low-to-no income and a mountain of financial stress. The dream had turned into a nightmare.
Later that year, desperate for answers, I signed up for coaching and was introduced to the concept of cash flow forecasting. I was skeptical. "I need to earn more money first," I thought. "You need to have them before you can manage them." It sounded obvious, right? But I was completely wrong. Thankfully, I decided to give it a go. Week after week, I stared at those data spreadsheets, still skeptical, but persisting. Looking at a 13-week forecast, all showing negative numbers, was incredibly stressful and painful.
By the end of the year, I was drowning in six-figure debt – half to the ATO, half in unsecured loans and debts to friends. Around that time, I stumbled upon Mike Michalowicz's "Profit First." Naturally, I approached it with the same skepticism. Yet, with nothing left to lose, I decided to try it. I started putting a tiny percentage of every payment I received into different "jars."
Step by step, cent by cent, dollar by dollar, things started to improve. I can't express the sheer joy I felt when I saw a positive cash flow within my 13-week horizon for the first time! It was incredible! Even though I still saw 12 negative weeks, I felt a newfound confidence because I was in control. I knew exactly what was coming, I could see it, and I could make simple, incremental decisions. I identified areas for improvement and proactively spoke with clients about earlier payments and vendors about extended terms. I saw the money leaks and plugged them. Visualizing it all made perfect sense. Leveraging my 20 years of experience designing and building financial systems, I heavily modified my original forecasting spreadsheet (already a complex beast) and incorporated the Profit First philosophy.
During this transformation, we applied the same methodology to our family budget and saw remarkable success. 2018-2019 was the worst financial year in business, yet this simple system propelled us out of debt completely within 18 months. From negative six figures to net zero. The moment the last cent of debt was paid off, I felt an immense sense of relief. And, as you might guess, things continued to improve from there.
Looking back, I'm amazed by the simplicity and power of this system. I'm not the most consistent person, often bored by repetitive tasks, but this is one system I won't abandon. Five-plus years of consistent weekly implementation (just 15-30 minutes!), and I can confidently say it works!
As time went on, my spreadsheet became increasingly cumbersome, struggling to handle the growing data and I started to think about alternatives. At the same time, when I started to share my spreadsheet with peers, helping them shift their mindset from expense tracking to forecasting, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and this ultimately led to the creation of ProfitFlow.
